It was love at first sight. The hay field was large enough to accommodate a fair sized market garden; there was an existing orchard and a small established vegetable garden that could feed our family while we were developing the farm; the old log home was gorgeous; and we were thrilled with the forest... it offered the perfect environment to house and walk our heritage goats. We purchased our property in November 2013 with the goal to grow it into a flourishing, productive, and ethically run farm.

After the initial ploughing, we vowed that no more big machinery would enter the market garden. Instead, we forked all the vegetable beds by hand, using a small rototiller only the first year to help break up the soil. We fought wire worms and buttercups; we made countless of hikes into the forest to drop off the hundreds of slugs we had picked off the vegetable beds, until we acquired three Indian Runner ducks who now patrol the perimeter of the garden and help prevent new invasions. We dug drainage ditches and irrigation channels; we built greenhouses, chicken coops, and goat houses; we raised a hay barn and a milking room, a pumphouse, and a combination washing station/ shelter for our tent trailer and Wwoofer (Willing Worker on organic farms) housing during the growing season. We had a pond dug that would provide our garden with much needed (completely recycled) rainwater, and, most recently, we built a walk-in cooler to store our harvest.

We are committed to organic farming, and we were formally granted certified status in the spring of 2015. We also endeavour to be as self-sufficient as we can; therefore, we make and turn our own compost, made from the manure and bedding of our animals and the weeds of our garden; and we mulch our beds with hay rather than with plastic, which would be more effective in suppressing weeds, but is far less desirable for the health of the planet.

We believe in keeping heritage varieties alive and most of the vegetables we grow are open pollinated, heirloom varieties. We have two heritage breed farm dogs, over a dozen different heritage chicken breeds, and five heritage goats in addition to our heritage ducks mentioned before. We collect eggs from our free-range birds, we milk our does, and walk our herd in the forest every day along with the dogs.
